Female delegates attending the 2022 COP27 climate conference of the United Nations have raised concerns about experiencing harassment, insults, and derogatory remarks from their male counterparts, Financial Times reports.
One delegate, Camila Zepeda, who led the Mexican delegation, disclosed that she had received inappropriate messages from male delegates during the previous year's conference. Initially, Zepeda did not report the incidents, but she decided to speak out after witnessing other women facing similar harassment at UN talks. She emphasized the need for the organization to implement preventive measures against such disappointments.
The Financial Times also reported that other women were targeted at the 2022 climate conference, as confirmed by a source familiar with the events. In response to these complaints, around 20 countries participating in the conference sent a joint letter to the UN, including Mexico, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Peru, and Canada. The letter called for the organizers to address the treatment of negotiators and ensure a safe environment for all attendees.
Furthermore, there were incidents of misconduct during the preparations for COP28 in Bonn, Germany, where cases of harassment were reported. The publication reports that several complaints were made by women in the Mexican delegation, who encountered attempts to undermine their credibility by male counterparts.
