Militants linked to the Islamic State killed 37 people in a school in western Uganda. Representatives of the army and police state that the attack on a high school in Mpondwe in Kasese County took place late on the evening of June 16, AFP reports.
The military is now pursuing criminals from the Allied Democratic Forces.
"37 bodies were found and taken to the mortuary of Bwera Hospital, in the neighbouring city," said Felix Kulayigye, spokesman for the Uganda People's Defense Forces, in a statement.
Eight individuals were injured, and six were kidnapped and transported to the Virunga National Park by the attackers. According to Kasese Commissioner Joe Walusimbi, at least 25 of the victims "have been confirmed as students at the school."
This was Uganda's bloodiest incident since two explosions in Kampala in 2010 killed 76 people. The Somali terrorist group Al-Shabaab, which has close ties to the worldwide terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda, claimed credit in that time.
