At the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin laid out the conditions under which Russia would consider using nuclear weapons, Gazeta.ru reported.
As outlined in nuclear doctrine, Putin stated that the use of nuclear weapons would only be contemplated if Russia's territorial integrity, independence, sovereignty, or very existence were threatened. These conditions serve as a clear indication that nuclear arms remain a last-resort option. Putin emphasized that, at present, there is no immediate need to deploy such extreme measures.
"But we, first of all, currently do not have such a need. Secondly, discussing this topic itself diminishes the possibility of reducing the limits on the use of nuclear weapons," he said.
In his speech, the Russian president highlighted the delicate balance between discussing the use of nuclear weapons and striving to reduce their overall utilization. He warned that engaging in public debates about this sensitive topic could hinder efforts aimed at establishing limits on the deployment and use of nuclear arms.
The topic of nuclear weapons has always been a matter of global concern, as their destructive potential poses a significant threat to international peace and stability. Putin's statements at the St. Petersburg forum shed light on Russia's stance and reaffirms the country's commitment to utilizing nuclear weapons only under extreme circumstances.
Furthermore, during the forum, the Russian President made a notable remark highlighting the historical use of nuclear weapons by the United States. Putin emphasized that the US had set a precedent by utilizing atomic bombs during World War II.
