The President of Turkey opposed the installation of a statue in his honor, TRT Haber reported.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has expressed his objection to the proposal of erecting a statue in his honor. The proposal had been put forward by the opposition mayor of Bolu city, who suggested the idea in the event that Erdogan wins the upcoming presidential election.
Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun made a statement informing the population of the president's decision stating that president Erdogan dismissed the notion, stating that civil servants should be recognized and distinguished not through monuments, but rather by their effectiveness and efficiency in serving the people. The president further emphasized that it would be more appropriate to allocate the funds intended for the statue toward supporting the underprivileged citizens of Bolu.
In addition, Altun stated that they have witnessed a political environment before the 2023 Presidential and Parliamentary General Elections where political principles and values were trampled upon.
“We see that the Mayor of Bolu is making an effort to fulfill 'the promise' in this mediocre opposition environment. However, we would like to emphasize that our esteemed President is against the construction of his own statue with the resources and possibilities of our dear nation” he noted.
