Russian Ambassador to Cairo, Georgiy Borisenko, confirmed that Egypt has expressed its interest in joining the BRICS group. The ambassador stated that Egypt is interested on transitioning trade to alternative currencies, including national currencies and a possible new common currency, which aligns with one of BRICS' priorities.
Foreign ministers of the BRICS member states (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) held a meeting in Cape Town on June 2. The meeting was also attended by senior diplomats from 12 Global South countries, namely Argentina, Bangladesh, Comoros, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela, who expressed their desire to join the group.
The BRICS group, comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, stands as an alliance of major developing economies, with the aim of fostering cooperation across diverse domains such as economics, trade, finance, and geopolitics.
In the year 2023, BRICS continues to occupy a pivotal role in shaping the geopolitical landscape. Representing more than 40% of the global population, these nations contribute approximately 23% to the world's GDP.
