The Deputy Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development, Kazakhstan plans to significantly increase its coal exports to Uzbekistan. The goal is to gradually increase the exports by 25 times, reaching a supply of up to 12.8mn tons of coal to Uzbekistan by 2025, "Kursiv Media" reports.
This expansion in export routes was announced during the fourth coal forum in Astana. The deputy minister highlighted the importance of the coal industry in Kazakhstan, as it contributes to approximately 70% of electricity production, ensures the full utilization of coke production, and meets the fuel requirements of various sectors and the population.
In 2022, Kazakhstan's coal mining enterprises produced a total of 113.9mn tons of coal, indicating a 1.9% increase compared to the previous year. The country also exported 9.8mn tons of coal worth $701.5mn to destinations outside the Eurasian Economic Union. Specifically, Uzbekistan imported 487,000 tons of Kazakh coal, amounting to $13.6mn in value.
Recent reports have indicated that Europe is seeking buyers in Asia for its unused coal reserves.
