Uzbekistan's presence in the Chinese market grows through mung bean exports
According to the Statistics Agency, in January-April 2023, Uzbekistan exported 45,500 tons of mung bean worth $35.1 mn to 23 countries. China made up 42, 000 of that tonnage. With its rapidly increasing middle class which makes up roughly 40% of the total population, China ranks in first place within the food retail market.
The volume of the staple legume export in 2023 increased by 2.400 tons compared to the corresponding period of 2022.

Pakistan - 1.0 thousand tons
Kazakhstan - 588 tons
Tajikistan - 559 tons
Russia - 257 tons
The Netherlands - 191 tons
Turkey - 163 tons
Korea - 48 tons
The increase in exports is a positive sign that China's economy is recovering from the Covid-19 indued recession and spending power is returning to the population. It is also an indicator of Uzbekistan growing presence on the global market, and interesting to note that the Netherlands also imports a significant amount from Uzbekistan, showing an increase in cooperation between the Central Asian state and Europe.
