Berlin has asked that Beijing deactivate covert police units working in Germany, Bloomberg reports.
China is accused by the German government of deploying these troops to "control and intimidate" foreign Chinese. Starting from November 2022, talks on this issue have been underway.
The Chinese government refuted the creation of illicit police facilities in Germany in February but confessed to running certain "service stations" and vowed to tear them down. Yet, Maximilian Kall, a spokeswoman for the German Interior Ministry, disclosed that at least two Chinese police units are still operating in Germany and are being watched by the local government.
According to the German Ministry of Internal Affairs, there is no bilateral arrangement between Germany and China regulating overseas police departments. According to Safeguard Defenders, China has set up countless illicit police stations across the world.
Western authorities suspect that these foreign service facilities are used to spy on Chinese nationals living overseas, particularly dissidents.
