Russia is reportedly actively evacuating residents from areas near Zaporizhzhia in south Ukraine. These numbers include some 660 children, according to officials.
“The general situation in the area near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is becoming increasingly unpredictable and potentially dangerous. I’m extremely concerned about the very real nuclear safety and security risks facing the plant. We must act now to prevent the threat of a severe nuclear accident and its associated consequences for the population and the environment,” said Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Zaporizhzhia plant was taken over in February 2022, days after the Russian invasion happened. Both sides exchanged fires near the facility and an agreement has not been reached so far to create a safety zone around it.
