Uzbekistan is home to 174 World War II veterans who served on the labor front, ranging in age from the youngest at 78 to the oldest at 112 years old. According to the Ministry of Defense, 25 veterans are over 100, media reports.
With 55 veterans, Tashkent, and the surrounding capital have the most (26). With 19 veterans still alive, the Fergana region ranks third overall.
At the onset of World War II, Uzbekistan had a population of around 6.5mn. Over 1.9mn people participated in the fighting.
Uzbekistan lost more than 538,000 people to death during the war, and another 158,000 went missing.
