On May 3, 21 people were killed and 48 others were injured as a result of shelling by the Russian army in the Kherson region, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced.
All the dead are said to be civilians. According to the information of the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine, the Russian military carried out "indiscriminate" firing, shells hit civilian infrastructure, including the local "ATB" supermarket and the train station.
“A train station and a crossing, a house, a hardware store, a grocery store, a gas station—do you know what these places have in common? It is a bloody trail that Russia is leaving with its shells killing civilians," Zelensky said.
It was also reported that several settlements in the Kherson region were shelled. A total of 16 people died in Kherson. The Prosecutor General's Office has started a pre-trial investigation into the violation of the laws and customs of war.
Russia captured Kherson at the very beginning of its large-scale invasion of Ukraine. In November 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered troops to withdraw from the city to the left bank of the Dnieper. The Russian government explained its decision as a "military necessity" at the time. As soon as they retreated, they started shelling the city regularly.
