Malawi has made significant progress in reducing malaria casualties by almost 49%, from 3,613 in 2017 to 1,829 in 2022. However, the disease still poses a considerable workload on health workers and puts pressure on drugs in all health facilities, media reports.
The government of Malawi is committed to sustaining and expanding existing and new WHO-recommended malaria control interventions to combat the disease. In 2021, the government distributed 10.7mn treated bed nets to households nationwide through the insecticide-treated mosquito nets mass distribution campaign.
Furthermore, the WHO country representative for Malawi called on all stakeholders to renew political commitments and bolster malaria prevention and control investments. Although progress has been made, malaria remains a significant public health and development challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. The WHO will continue to provide technical guidance and support to the Malawian government in fighting malaria.
