Ministry of Environment and Tourism said on April 3 that Mongolia welcomed over 130,000 foreign tourists in the first quarter of 2023 due to its measures to revive the pandemic-hit tourism sector and diversify its economy.
In particular, Mongolia has declared 2023, 2024, and 2025 as "Years to Visit Mongolia." In addition, the number of visa-free travel countries to Mongolia has reached 61 after, in January, it exempted citizens of thirty-four countries from visa requirements for up to thirty days until the end of 2025.
The country's economy is mainly dependent on its export-oriented mining sector.
The Asian country has set a goal of welcoming at least 1mn foreign travellers and earning $1bn from the sector in the coming years. The country received 290,400 foreign tourists in 2022, earning $350mn from the tourism sector.
Bordered by China and Russia, Mongolia is known for its vast grasslands, rugged mountains, and the Gobi Desert. Sfamousular tourist destinations in Mongolia include the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, the ancient town of Kharkhorin, Lake Khovsgol, and the Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi Desert. Additionally, Mongolia is home to unique nomadic cultures and traditions, which can also be experienced through tourism.
