The Boxing Federation of Uzbekistan has given an official response to the news that various countries are announcing a boycott of the World Boxing Championship in Uzbekistan.
The statement says that Uzbekistan does not have the authority to allow or deny the participation of the boxers.
"Due to the political situation prevailing in the world today, some Internet sources and social networks are spreading biased news about the World Boxing Championship to be held in Tashkent on April 30-May 14 of this year.
The World Senior Championship, held every two years, is organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA). The Uzbek side does not have the authority to permit or ban the countries registered to participate in the competition. Uzbekistan is the host country of the competition and deals with organizational issues," the statement said.
Further, the document stresses that Uzbekistan is a country that adheres to international sports norms and supports the principle of sports being free from politics.
"Registration of championship participants, national teams, coaches, and referees are carried out by IBA. When our country won the right to host the competition, there were no current restrictions on the participation of national teams or athletes in international tournaments.
"Uzbekistan is a country that adheres to international sports norms and supports the principle of sports being free from politics."
