The press service of the General Prosecutor's Office reports that three individuals have been charged with the relevant articles of the Criminal Code as part of the investigation into the illegal actions of law enforcement officials in the Nukus unrest.
At the meeting held in July 2022, Shavkat Mirziyoyev spoke about the events that took place in Nukus and said, "The actions of the armed forces should also be thoroughly analyzed. If they used wrong force, they should also be held responsible according to the current legislation," he said.
On January 31, the Bukhara regional court announced the verdict on the results of the criminal case against 22 defendants accused of the events of July 1-2 in Nukus. One of the convicts, Polat Shamshetov, died in the pre-trial detention centre on February 4. An independent commission conducted an investigation and found that the information about the possibility of mental or physical torture against the deceased is unfounded.
On January 17, 2023, two criminal cases with Article 244 against 18 and 21 persons were sent to the Karakalpakstan court for substantive consideration with the indictment. And on February 6, the open trial of the criminal case against 39 defendants began.
