The Karakalpakstan Parliament, the Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Internal Affairs issued a joint statement regarding the illegal demonstrations that took place in Nukus on July 1.
"Despite the policy of openness and free expression carried out in Uzbekistan, on July 1, 2022, in the city of Nukus, a group of criminals organized illegal attempts to take over the republic’s administrative bodies.
Disguising with populist slogans, and manipulating the minds of citizens, the organizers of the riots, gathered the throng in front of the administrative buildings in Nukus.
The protestors, relying on the gathered crowd, tried to take over these state institutions and thereby creating discord in the society and derailing the stability of the socio-political situation in Uzbekistan.
With the strict measures taken by the law enforcement agencies, the illegal actions of the initiators were stopped, and the spread of attempts to organize public disorder was stopped.
We say with confidence that our country has all the necessary potential to prevent further destabilization of the situation. A group of organizers of mass riots and persons who actively resisted law enforcement agencies were arrested. Investigations are currently being conducted against them. All instigators will be identified and prosecuted in accordance with applicable laws.
Attempts to influence the development of the situation in Karakalpakstan by malicious forces outside the republic, including targeted information attacks and deliberate distortion of events, are also worrying.
We call for joint efforts to ensure public safety and stability, to warn citizens against illegal actions, and to resolve the issues within the framework of the law," the statement reads
