Uzbekistan may reintroduce the 7-year president’s terms of office which was scrapped in 2011. This is stipulated in the draft law on amendments to the Constitution, which was put up for public discussion on June 25.
The draft bill states in the following wording of Article 24 of the Constitution: “The right to life is an inalienable right of every person and is protected by law. Assassination is the most serious crime. The death penalty is banned in the Republic of Uzbekistan. "
Article 40 is also supplemented as follows: “Article 40-1. Everyone has the right to a healthy and comfortable environment, to have accurate information about its condition, and to compensation for damage to their health or property caused by environmental violations.”
It is also proposed to replace the word "five" in the second part of Article 90 with the word "seven".
Following the amendment, the second part of this article shall read as follows:
“The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan is elected by the citizens of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the basis of universal, equal, and direct suffrage by secret ballot for a term of 7 years. The procedure for electing the President shall be determined by the law of the Republic of Uzbekistan. "
