A Memorandum of Understanding and Co-operation between the Blue Marine Foundation (UK) and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan has been signed in Ashgabat.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the document aims to promote the conservation of biodiversity in the Caspian Sea. Blue Marine is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the protection of the marine environment.
Key strategic interventions are as follows:
Securing marine protected areas to ensure the protection of at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.
Developing models of sustainable fishing proving that low-impact fishing benefits marine life, local fishers and communities.
Restoring marine habitats to revive and protect vulnerable and threatened species and to sequester carbon.
Tackling unsustainable fishing by highlighting poor practice and developing solutions.
The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water not connected to the world's oceans. It is unique in that it is home to relict species of flora and fauna, including the largest herd of sturgeon fish.
Local experts told Daryo that there are a number of preconditions for possible pollution of the Caspian Sea.
These include the exploitation of hydrocarbon reserves in the sea and in neighbouring territories, high population and industrial density in neighbouring territories, and intensive agricultural development of land in the valleys of flowing rivers.
