President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan held a meeting with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, Chairman of the People's Council of Turkmenistan, as part of a working visit to Turkmenistan. The talks took place shortly after the Uzbek leader’s arrival in the coastal city of Turkmenbashi, according to the Presidential Press Service.
President Mirziyoyev opened the meeting by congratulating Berdimuhamedow on the successful organization of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), praising its agenda as crucial for the sustainable development of the region.
The two leaders discussed progress on implementing agreements reached during their previous meeting in Samarkand in April. They noted with satisfaction the steady growth of Uzbek-Turkmen strategic partnership, underpinned by mutual trust, shared interests, and strong political dialogue at all levels.
Trade turnover between the two countries has reached $600mn since the beginning of the year. Mirziyoyev and Berdimuhamedow reviewed ongoing cooperation in priority areas such as energy, industry, agriculture, transport, and water management. They also highlighted the establishment of the Shovot–Toshovuz border trade zone and the continuation of interregional and cultural exchanges.
In preparation for upcoming high-level engagements, the leaders discussed planned meetings of intergovernmental commissions, a joint Business Council, a Forum of Regions, and cultural events to further deepen bilateral ties.
They also exchanged views on the agenda for the UN LLDC conference and the 7th Consultative Meeting of Central Asian Leaders, which is set to take place in Tashkent later this year.
The LLDC conference, which will be held in the Awaza National Tourist Zone, is expected to attract senior global figures including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and will address key issues such as transport connectivity, climate resilience, and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The conference is set to conclude with the adoption of the Awaza political declaration and an action program.
President Mirziyoyev last visited Turkmenistan in October 2024, when he addressed the international forum “The Interconnection of Times and Civilizations – the Basis of Peace and Development,” commemorating the 300th anniversary of Turkmen poet and philosopher Makhtumkuli Firugi.
