UzAuto Motors has established a commanding presence in Uzbekistan's automotive sector, holding 84% market share as of 2023, according to a report by KPMG Uzbekistan. The report highlights growth in the new car market, which saw total sales reach 456,000 units last year, with 380,000 vehicles produced domestically.
As of January 2024, the total number of registered vehicles in Uzbekistan is projected to approach 4mn, of which approximately 3.8mn are passenger cars.
Popular models like the Chevrolet Cobalt and Damas have contributed to 55% of total sales, underscoring the local preference for these vehicles.
The influx of imported passenger cars has also been notable, increasing by 140.9% from 2020 to 2023, with imports rising to 73,000 units. The government aims to further bolster local production, targeting an output of 1mn passenger cars by 2030 to meet the growing demand and enhance vehicle availability.
The majority of vehicle purchases in 2023 were made by individuals for personal and family use, totaling 3.4mn units. Among the most sought-after models were the Cobalt, Gentra, Nexia, Spark, and Damas. Meanwhile, government agencies and ministries acquired 13,000 vehicles, with popular choices including the Chevrolet Gentra, Malibu, Captiva, and the luxurious Mercedes S-Class.
Currently, Uzbekistan has 103 passenger cars per 1,000 people, an increase from 86.3 cars per 1,000 in 2020. However, this figure remains lower compared to neighboring countries, with Kazakhstan at 220 cars and Russia at 327 cars per 1,000 people.
The highest concentration of registered vehicles is found in Tashkent, with 197 cars per 1,000 residents, followed by the Tashkent region (136 cars) and Bukhara region (118 cars). In contrast, the Jizzakh region shows the lowest provision, with only 73 cars per 1,000 people.
