Uzbekistan 11th among nations with most Sukhoi fighter jets

The Sukhoi fighter jets, symbols of Soviet-era military ingenuity, are renowned for their adaptability, speed, and firepower, rendering them indispensable assets for air forces worldwide. Uzbekistan, positioned at 11th among 34 nations, proudly maintains 38 active Sukhoi jets, with a notable preference for the Su-27 variant. In a landscape of shifting geopolitical dynamics, these aircraft continue to play a crucial role in shaping Uzbekistan's modern military strategies.

According to the 2024 World Air Forces report from FlightGlobal, Russia maintains the largest fleet of Sukhoi jets, with a staggering 1,082 active aircraft and an additional 110 on order. China and India closely follow suit, boasting sizable fleets of Sukhoi jets customized to suit their strategic needs.

India, with 266 active Sukhoi aircraft and 12 on order, utilizes the Su-30 variant extensively, enhancing its military strength with cutting-edge technology.

Meanwhile, China, with 399 active Sukhoi jets and 50 on order, employs a variety of variants including the Su-27, J-11/16, J-15, Su-30/33, and Su-35, solidifying its position as a key player in the region's military landscape.

Other countries in Central Asia also feature prominently on the list of Sukhoi operators. Kazakhstan (ranks 6th), with 69 active Sukhoi aircraft and 16 on order, boasts variants such as the Su-24, Su-25, Su-27, and Su-30. Uzbekistan, with 38 active Sukhoi jets, primarily utilizes the Su-27 variant.

Despite their relatively smaller fleets, Turkmenistan (ranks 17th), with 25 active Sukhoi aircraft, demonstrates a commitment to bolstering its military capabilities with the Su-25 variant.

The widespread adoption of Sukhoi jets underscores their strategic importance in modern warfare. From air superiority missions to ground attack operations, these aircraft continue to play a crucial role in shaping aerial combat doctrines worldwide.

In January 2024, the release of the PowerIndex, which evaluates the world's most formidable armies, indicated a downward shift in Uzbekistan's ranking. The country slipped from the 62nd position to 65th, placing it second among Central Asian nations, with Kazakhstan leading at 58th place.

The 2024 PowerIndex ranking highlighted Kazakhstan as the strongest military force in Central Asia, holding the 58th position globally. Following Kazakhstan were Turkmenistan at 83rd, Kyrgyzstan at 100th, and Tajikistan at 107th.

As per the PowerIndex assessment, Uzbekistan's defense budget stood at $796.8mn, supporting a military personnel strength of 68,000, with 48,000 actively serving.
