Gazprom Export and Gazprom Kyrgyzstan signed a long-term contract for the supply of natural gas from Russia to Kyrgyzstan. This agreement, formalized at Russia's St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2024, sets the stage for increased energy cooperation between the two nations.
Arzamat Aldayarov, Deputy General Director of Gazprom Kyrgyzstan, announced that Gazprom will double its natural gas supplies to Kyrgyzstan from 2025 to 2040. This increase aims to meet the growing energy needs of the country.
Starting in 2026, the Bishkek Thermal Power Plant will transition entirely to natural gas. Additionally, Kyrgyz authorities plan to launch several more gas-powered stations near Bishkek, all of which will utilize Russian natural gas.
Aldayarov emphasized the imminent development of a comprehensive five-year roadmap. Key components include:
Expanding gas infrastructure: The plan calls for the construction of 250–300 kilometres of gas pipelines annually. This network expansion aims to enhance gas supply throughout Bishkek and its surrounding areas.
Residential gasification: Connecting 13,000–15,000 apartment buildings to the gas network will alleviate pressure on existing electricity grids. The goal is to fully gasify residential areas, promoting efficient and eco-friendly heating solutions.
This long-term contract and the accompanying infrastructure developments are expected to significantly enhance Kyrgyzstan's energy stability and reduce its reliance on electricity for heating, easing the burden on the city’s electrical grid and promoting more efficient energy use.
