Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially recognised Mohammad Rahman Rahmani, a Taliban diplomat, as the Chargé d'Affaires of the Afghan Embassy in the country. This move is part of ongoing efforts to develop and formalize relations between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan under the current Afghan administration.
Kazakhstan’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Alibek Bakayev, held a meeting with Rahmani in Astana, according to the ministry’s statement. The meeting focused on the importance of Afghanistan’s engagement with regional countries to support its economic revival and stability. The ministry’s communication did not refer to the Taliban's self-designation as the "Islamic Emirate."
The official recognition of the Taliban diplomat is aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, economic, and humanitarian sectors between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. Bakayev emphasized that these efforts are expected to contribute positively to the situation in Afghanistan and support broader regional peace and stability.
This development follows a similar recognition by Turkmenistan, which recently accepted a Taliban diplomat as Chargé d'Affaires of the Afghan Embassy in Ashgabat. Kazakhstan’s approach is consistent with the region’s broader strategy of engaging with the Taliban regime.
In June, Kazakhstan’s President announced the removal of the Taliban from the country’s list of terrorist organizations, a decision intended to facilitate economic relations with Afghanistan under the current government.
