Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev convened a meeting focused on energy conservation and the deployment of alternative energy sources on August 27. The presidential press service reported that the meeting addressed key findings from recent studies and outlined steps to improve energy efficiency across the country.
The meeting reviewed a study by the Fergana Polytechnic Institute, which identified significant energy losses at the Logon substation. The substation loses 5mn kWh annually, exceeding the standard natural loss rate by 1.5 times. To address this issue, experts recommended redistributing the load among 113 transformer points, potentially reducing energy losses by 765,000 kWh. Additionally, the installation of reactive power batteries on transformers near water pumping stations could save another 1.1mn kWh.
The total energy losses in one district of Fergana were calculated at 15.5mn kWh, equivalent to 6bn. President Mirziyoyev directed that these measures be implemented not only in Fergana but also in other regions to curb similar losses.
The meeting also highlighted gas-saving initiatives in Karakalpakstan. The installation of efficient gas burners and insulation of heating systems for 95,000 households resulted in savings of 145mn cubic metres of gas. Further work in an additional 16,000 homes is expected to save another 20mn cubic metres of gas. President Mirziyoyev instructed the modernization of heating systems in 1 mn households nationwide. He also emphasized the importance of large gas consumers adopting energy-saving practices, noting that currently, only 25% have done so.
The president addressed the ongoing efforts to integrate renewable energy sources into the country's infrastructure. A target was established to ensure that at least 25% of the water management system is powered by renewable energy, primarily solar, by 2027. To support this goal, Uzbekistan plans to install 182 MW of alternative energy capacity for households and 791 MW for businesses by the end of the year. The president issued a directive to accelerate the implementation of these initiatives, cautioning against delays.
