Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has criticized certain former Soviet states for attempting to benefit from Russia without providing anything in return. In an interview with Russian TV channel Russia 1, Lukashenko stated:
“Russia and Belarus are actually in the same boat. If it capsizes, we will also sink together. There is no need to hide our allied relations. Unlike some countries that offer nothing to Russia but expect benefits, we will not act in such a manner.”
Lukashenko highlighted that this situation is unsustainable and noted that, in times of crisis, such as the unrest in Kazakhstan, countries quickly turn to Russia for assistance. He remarked on the CSTO's swift response in sending forces to address the unrest.
The Belarusian President expressed confidence that CIS countries will continue to seek help from Russia and Belarus during emergencies. He underscored the importance of preserving economic ties within the post-Soviet space, stating:
“Who is waiting for products from Kazakhstan or Uzbekistan in the United States or the European Union? They are aiming to sell to Russia. We have a common market, and losing it would be unwise.”
Lukashenko also commented on Armenia, suggesting that it relies primarily on CIS countries. He added:
“Let Armenia focus on developing its own economy and rely on their resources. France or Macron will not be there forever. Tomorrow he will disappear and everyone will forget about Armenia.”
These remarks reflect Lukashenko’s stance on the role of CIS countries and the economic and political dynamics within the region.
