ACWA Power, a leading Saudi-listed company known for its expertise in water desalination and energy transition, has officially commenced the construction of the Beruniy Wind Independent Power Plant (IPP) and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the Beruniy Region of Karakalpakstan. The groundbreaking ceremony held on August 19 was attended by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The Beruniy Wind IPP project, involving a 200 MW wind power plant and a 100 MW BESS, represents an investment of $260mn. The project is expected to generate 800mn kWh of clean energy annually, sufficient to power approximately 292,000 households. Additionally, it aims to save 212mn cubic meters of natural gas and reduce CO2 emissions by 336,000 tonnes per year. A 45 km double-circuit 220 kV power transmission line will also be constructed to connect the plant to the Beruniy substation.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency Shavkat Mirziyoyev for leading the groundbreaking ceremony of this pivotal project that marks a significant milestone in our partnership with the Republic of Uzbekistan. This project represents not only our commitment to sustainable energy development but also our shared vision for a prosperous future. Together, we are paving the way for transformative solutions that will empower communities, drive economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for the people of Uzbekistan. We are honoured to be part of this important journey, Mohammad Abunayyan, ACWA Power's Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated.
ACWA Power’s investment in Uzbekistan is substantial, with 15 projects currently underway and a total investment volume of up to $15bn. These projects are critical to supporting Uzbekistan’s energy transition and aligning with the country's sustainable development objectives. The Beruniy Wind IPP project will achieve commercial operation by Q426.
