Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) has registered a significant increase in container shipments through the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) for 2024. In 7M24, container shipments from China via this route grew 14 times compared to the same period in 2023.
This increase in transit volume is attributed to a series of strategic improvements aimed at boosting route efficiency. In 2023, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia established the Middle Corridor Multimodal joint venture. This initiative introduced a "single window" system, which has streamlined cargo transportation and provided fixed delivery times and transparent rates.
Kazakhstan is also enhancing its port infrastructure along the Caspian Sea coast. These developments have contributed to more efficient transit operations. Current delivery times have improved significantly, with cargo from China arriving in Baku, Azerbaijan, within 9 days, and reaching the Black Sea ports of Poti or Batumi in Georgia in 12 days. Deliveries to Constanta, Romania, which involve crossing the Black Sea, now take between 20 to 22 days.
During this period, the Altynkol station handled 7.7 mn tons of cargo, including 3.1 mn tons of transit cargo from China. This represents an increase of 8% in total cargo and 15% in transit cargo compared to the previous year.
The improvement in transit times is not limited to sea routes. In July 2024, a container train travelling from Xi’an, China, through the Khorgos border crossing, reached Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 5 days.
