Kazakhstan is set to increase its grain exports to China, with a target of reaching 3mn tons, according to Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov. This was discussed during recent talks with Wang Jianjun, Director of the Economy and Trade Department at China's National Development and Reform Commission.
Kazakh-Chinese agricultural trade has seen significant growth, with the turnover of agricultural products rising by 1.7 times in 2023, exceeding $1.3bn. For 1H24, trade between the two countries amounted to $648.1mn, a 12% increase over the same period last year. This includes $460mn in exports from Kazakhstan to China and $188mn in imports.
The countries have established strategic cooperation in agriculture, with Saparov noting the importance of this sector in bilateral relations. The two sides agreed to increase grain exports to China to 2mn tons, but Kazakhstan has indicated its readiness to supply up to 3mn tons, supporting further development of mutual trade.
Wang Jianjun confirmed China's commitment to maintaining Kazakhstan as a major grain supplier and emphasized the need to determine import volumes to ensure consistent supply. The discussions also included considerations of the logistics involved in supporting the growing trade.
In addition to grain, Kazakhstan has signed agreements with China covering the export of 28 types of crop and livestock products.
