Uzbekistan is set to announce a tender in October to attract a private operator for the management of the Samarkand region power grid. This initiative marks the beginning of a broader effort to transfer the management of regional electricity grids to the private sector, with similar projects planned for Jizzakh and Syrdarya next year.
These efforts are part of Uzbekistan's ongoing energy sector reforms, which aim to increase private sector participation. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, during an open dialogue with business leaders in Nukus, emphasized the success of these reforms, noting that $3.5bn worth of private partnership projects have already been launched, with an additional 50 projects valued at $31.5bn currently underway.
In addition to energy sector privatization, the government is working to boost production by involving entrepreneurs in the exploitation of subsoil resources. This year, more than 150 mines and deposits have been transferred to private businesses, with another 300 sites expected to be offered by year-end.
To meet the demand for construction materials, 172 mines with reserves totalling 110mn cubic meters of sand and gravel will be allocated for business use.
