Astana Airport was temporarily closed for two and a half hours on August 17 following an aviation incident involving a Boeing 777 aircraft operated by Swiss International Air Lines.
The Civil Aviation Committee of Kazakhstan reported that at 16:00 local time, a Swissair Boeing 777-300ER (tail number HBJNI) operating flight SWR161 from Tokyo to Zurich made an emergency landing at Astana Airport. The crew made the decision to land due to a suspected medical emergency involving a 50-year-old passenger.
After the successful landing, while maneuvering on the taxiway, the aircraft inadvertently rolled off the pavement onto the grass, causing the airport to declare an emergency at 16:03. This led to the temporary closure of the airport for all incoming and outgoing flights.
Emergency rescue teams were dispatched, and after completing the necessary operations, the airport resumed normal operations at 18:34.
The airline noted that the Boeing 777-300ER would undergo a thorough examination for potential damage, and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Fortunately, none of the 319 passengers on board were injured during the incident.
