The Afghan Ministry of Public Health announced that over 15,000 individuals are currently receiving treatment for drug addiction across sixteen specialized centres nationwide. According to the Ministry's data, these centres have treated approximately 55,000 addicts over the past two years.
The Ministry initiated a nationwide program aimed at providing comprehensive care for addicts, including treatment within their own homes. Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, the Ministry's spokesperson, emphasized that the goal is to ensure that every addict across the country has access to treatment.
The 1,000-bed drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul is playing a significant role in these efforts. Abdul Nasir Munqad, the head of the facility, reported that between 3,000 and 3,500 addicts are currently being treated at the centre, with an additional 800 individuals admitted at the request of their families. Munqad also highlighted a critical issue facing the facility – the lack of sufficient support from international organizations, particularly in terms of essential supplies such as food, clothing, and medicine.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Afghanistan in its fight against drug addiction. In a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Counter-Narcotics at the Ministry of Interior, the UNODC's representative assured continued cooperation in combating drug-related challenges and providing treatment for addicts across the country.
