The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced a new contribution from Canada, amounting to approximately $2.2mn for the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund. This latest donation is a testament to Canada's ongoing commitment to addressing the humanitarian needs in Afghanistan.
#OCHA thanks #Canada for a new contribution of CAD 3 million (US$2.2 million) to the #AfghanistanHumanitarianFund for 2024. With this additional support, Canada has contributed a total of CAD 15.8 million to the #AHF since 2019.#InvestInHumanity #CBPFS pic.twitter.com/tY6gTQ7JO8

In a message posted on its X page, OCHA expressed its gratitude for the Canadian government’s support, noting that this donation adds to the substantial total of CAD $15.8mn Canada has contributed to Afghanistan since 2019. The funds are crucial as OCHA had previously highlighted a severe budget shortfall threatening the continuation of essential humanitarian activities in the region.
Currently, about 23.7mn people in Afghanistan are projected to require humanitarian assistance this year. The crisis is exacerbated by climate change, with heavy rains, floods, and storms compounding the difficulties faced by the population. Additionally, the return of Afghan refugees from neighboring countries like Iran and Pakistan has intensified the strain on resources.
The worsening humanitarian situation underscores the urgent need for international support and collaborative efforts. While Canada's contribution is a vital step, the broader international community must continue and expand these efforts.
Previously, it was reported that Afghanistan has received $7bn in international aid over the past three years, with $2.9bn coming from the United States for both humanitarian and developmental purposes.
Despite this substantial assistance, Afghanistan is still facing a severe economic crisis. The United Nations has sought over $3bn to fund humanitarian efforts for 2024, but by July 12, only 23% of this goal, or $710mn, had been met. The United States continues to be the largest donor, contributing nearly $232mn this year.
