Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Company (NMMC), the world's fourth-largest gold producer and Central Asia’s largest gold miner, has made a landmark move by becoming the first Uzbek company to partner with the International Women in Mining (IWiM). This partnership stresses NMMC's dedication to advancing gender equality and empowering women in the mining sector.
As the largest employer in Uzbekistan, NMMC employs over 6,261 women, reflecting its commitment to offering opportunities in a traditionally male-dominated industry. The company has been proactive in its gender agenda for years. Since 2020, NMMC has championed the "Principles of Gender Equality and Women's Rights Promotion," which includes the establishment of a Women's Council responsible for driving gender equality initiatives across its divisions. This council organizes events to promote women's rights, supports educational pursuits, and addresses various personal and professional issues faced by female employees.
Joining IWiM will grant NMMC access to a wealth of best practices, participation in industry research, and the opportunity to engage with IWiM’s global network. This collaboration will help NMMC further its mission to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
By leveraging IWiM’s expertise and resources, NMMC aims to enhance its supportive work environment, promote professional growth, and inspire other companies to prioritize gender equality.
NMMC's extensive operations include 12 major mining sites, 7 hydrometallurgical plants, and 2 heap leaching workshops. It operates in the Navoi, Samarkand, and Jizzakh regions of Uzbekistan. The company's flagship asset, the Muruntau-Myutenbai mine, is the world’s largest open-pit mine with a resource base of 101mn ounces. NMMC’s total mineral resources are estimated at 148 million ounces of gold.
