At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 26, the South Korean delegation was incorrectly presented as the North Korean team, BBC reports. This misrepresentation occurred because the announcers mistakenly identified the South Korean delegation as North Korean. As a consequence, the names of both Korean countries were announced as "Democratic People's Republic of Korea".
The mistake resulted in the name “Democratic People's Republic of Korea” being announced twice, covering both North and South Korean delegations. This oversight prompted a sharp protest from the South Korean delegation.
Despite the mistake by the announcers, the TV broadcast of the ceremony used the correct names for the countries. The Olympic Games organisers, acknowledging their error, issued an apology to the South Korean athletes and officials.
The South Korean Ministry of Sport released a strong statement regarding the incident, indicating potential governmental repercussions against France, the host nation. Jang Mi-Ran, South Korea's second deputy sports minister and 2008 Olympic weightlifting champion, requested a meeting with IOC President Thomas Bach to express serious concerns over the incident.
South Korea has sent 143 athletes to the Olympic Games this year, competing in 21 sports. North Korea, making its first international games appearance since 2016, has around 100 athletes participating.
