A court in Uzbekistan has sentenced a 36-year-old man to 10 days of administrative arrest for making an "aggressive" comment about Israel’s outgoing ambassador to the Uzbekistan.
The incident began when the man, identified as R.A., posted a critical comment on July 24 under a Telegram post concerning the conclusion of Israeli Ambassador Zehavit Ben Hillel’s mission in Uzbekistan. The post, which marked the end of Ben Hillel’s tenure, attracted attention and elicited a response from R.A., who allegedly expressed his sentiments in a manner deemed aggressive by authorities.
Following the comment, R.A. was summoned to the police for questioning. The situation escalated when R.A. reportedly resisted arrest by "shouting loudly and using obscene language," which led to accusations of violating public order. The Mirzo-Ulugbek district criminal court in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, was tasked with handling the case.
According to the court’s decision, R.A. was found guilty of offences under article 183 of the administrative code, which pertains to petty hooliganism, and article 194, which covers failure to comply with the lawful demands of a police officer. The court sentenced him to 10 days of administrative arrest as a consequence of his actions.
The background to this case involves the recent end of Ambassador Zehavit Ben Hillel’s mission in Uzbekistan. Ben Hillel, who had been serving as Israel’s ambassador since 2020, completed her term on July 19. Her departure marked the conclusion of her diplomatic service in Uzbekistan.
