In an era marked by rapid economic growth and rising populations, the demand for water, energy, and other natural resources in Uzbekistan is increasing. To address these challenges, efforts are being made to develop and enhance the green energy sector, particularly within the country's water management system, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan reported.
Over half of 4.3mn hectares of irrigated land rely on pumps for water distribution. To improve efficiency and reduce electricity consumption, systematic upgrades are underway. This initiative aligns with the President's decree from September 11, 2023, which emphasizes the importance of implementing the Uzbekistan - 2030 strategy.
In 2024, the focus is on extending the operational life of pumping stations within the ministry system. Plans include renewing 148 pumps and 149 electric motors. To date, 135 pumps and 135 electric motors have been purchased, achieving 91% of the renewal target.
Additionally, the Cabinet of Ministers' meeting minutes from December 31, 2014, outlines plans for installing 2,051 LED lamps, 107 frequency converters, 83 solar batteries, 26 solar water heaters, and 132 condenser devices by the end of the year. As of now, 2,128 LED lamps, 66 capacitor devices, 73 frequency converters, 40 solar batteries, and 14 solar water heaters have been installed, with more projects underway.
Financially, UZS 3.1bn ($246,267) was allocated for pumping stations and vertical wells as of July 1, 2024. The actual electricity use was 2.95bn kWh, showing a reduction of 368.3mn kWh compared to the previous year’s consumption of 3.32bn kWh.
Looking ahead, plans for 2024 include installing 1,200 kW solar panels and 20,000 liters of solar collectors in administrative buildings and water management facilities. So far, 250.5 kW of solar panels and 2,000 liters of solar collectors have been installed.
The ongoing advancements in green energy are crucial for optimizing natural resource use and supporting the broader economic needs of Uzbekistan. By redirecting saved energy to other sectors, particularly to meet the growing needs of the population, the country is making strides toward a more sustainable and efficient future.
