Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are strengthening their economic ties with a focus on improving transport connections, following negotiations between countries in Tashkent on July 16. The discussions, part of the Uzbek-Turkmen Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation, highlighted efforts to enhance cross-border trade and streamline logistics.
Over the past five years, bilateral trade between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan has doubled, exceeding $1bn. Both sides expressed optimism about further expanding economic relations, particularly through the creation of cross-border trade zones to facilitate smoother commerce.
An important aspect of the talks was the development of transport and logistics links. Turkmenistan's potential accession to existing and planned multimodal transport corridors was discussed to improve regional connectivity. The parties also addressed simplifying visa procedures for transport operators, aiming to resolve past challenges faced by Turkmen truck drivers at Uzbekistan's borders.
The Central Asian region has shown increasing interest in facilitating truck movements across borders, emphasizing the need for uniform entry conditions and fees for drivers from different countries. Previous issues regarding visa disparities were acknowledged, with efforts to promote more efficient cross-border logistics.
In addition to transport infrastructure, cooperation in automotive, chemical, and electrical industries was on the agenda. Both countries explored ways to deepen collaboration through platforms such as the Forum of Regions, bilateral business councils, and joint participation in trade exhibitions.
