In a recent development highlighting growing economic ties between Kyrgyzstan and China, discussions have emerged regarding potential lithium mining ventures in the Central Asian nation.
According to reports from both Chinese and Kyrgyz media, Prime Minister Akylbek Zhaparov of Kyrgyzstan visited the province of Xinjiang, China, where he engaged in talks with officials from Zhicun Lithium, a prominent Chinese company specializing in lithium products.
Zhicun Lithium, known for its robust presence in the Chinese market, has set its sights on expanding into Central Asia. The company made headlines last year with the inauguration of a lithium carbonate production facility in Xinjiang, boasting an initial capacity of 60,000 tons annually. Plans are underway to double this capacity to 120,000 tons per year by 2025.
In addition to its operations in Xinjiang, Zhicun Lithium has expressed interest in Kyrgyzstan, exploring the potential for lithium mining and the construction of lithium carbonate production facilities within the country. These discussions align with Zhicun Lithium's broader regional ambitions, which also include collaborative ventures with Kazakh Invest, the state corporation of Kazakhstan.
