A major road infrastructure project is underway in Uzbekistan’s capital, as the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) invests $300mn to renovate 200 kilometers of roads and construct four overpasses in Tashkent.
Tashkent Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov confirmed the details during a recent interview with the Uzbekiston 24 TV channel. He noted that the funds were secured directly from the Chinese firm and will support extensive reconstruction and modernization efforts across the capital.
“200 kilometers of roads and four overpasses will be built in Tashkent,” Umurzakov stated, describing the initiative as one of the largest infrastructure upgrades in recent years.
The Tashkent city administration has also addressed public concerns about spending. Social media reports had claimed that $198mn would be allocated solely to the reconstruction of Shota Rustaveli Street. However, officials clarified that this figure is part of a broader estimate covering phased upgrades to road infrastructure citywide.
According to the mayor’s office, project costs will be finalized based on actual work performed. The first phase, estimated at $50mn, includes the complex reconstruction of Shota Rustaveli Street, as well as road and infrastructure upgrades on Amir Temur Avenue, Shahrisabz Street, Yangi Sergeli Street, and the construction of a major transport facility in Almazar district.
Plans also include the development of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor along Shota Rustaveli Street to improve public transport efficiency and reduce traffic congestion.
The roadworks are part of a broader collaboration between the Tashkent administration and CSCEC, following agreements signed in November 2024 on infrastructure projects worth nearly $1bn. In addition to road rehabilitation, around $259mn will be invested in the construction of modern bridges to help ease urban traffic.
The initiative will involve more than 200 specialists, including transport engineers and surveyors, working to modernize roads and adjacent infrastructure throughout the city.
