Trade turnover between Georgia and Tajikistan reached nearly $12mn in 1Q24, reflecting a 26.1% decline compared to $16mn in the same period of 2023. According to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), Georgia's exports to Tajikistan during the 5M24 amounted to $11.8mn, a 27% reduction from the $16mn recorded in the corresponding period of the previous year. Reexports from Georgia to Tajikistan totalled $9.7mn, down 29.2% from almost $14mn in January to May 2023.
In contrast, Tajikistan's exports to Georgia increased significantly, reaching $195,700, which is five times higher than the $36,000 recorded during the same months in 2023.
The total trade turnover between Georgia and Tajikistan in 2023 was over $37mn, a 62% increase from $23mn in 2022. Georgia's exports to Tajikistan during this period were $37mn, while imports stood at almost $270,000.
Earlier, Daryo reported that over the past 6-7 years, the GDP of Central Asian countries has increased by 70% to exceed $450bn. Intraregional trade has more than doubled to $11bn, and total foreign trade turnover nearly doubled to $225bn. Despite this growth, the IICA director pointed out that insufficient transport connectivity remains a major obstacle to economic development. The World Bank notes that transport costs can constitute up to 50% of the final cost of goods, highlighting the importance of overcoming these barriers to better integrate the region into global value chains.
