UNDP and Samruk-Kazyna partner to advance social inclusion and responsible business in Kazakhstan

UNDP and Samruk-Kazyna partner to advance social inclusion and responsible business in Kazakhstan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan and Samruk-Kazyna announced a collaboration aimed at advancing social inclusion and promoting responsible business practices across Kazakhstan. The partnership was formalized with the signing of a non-financial statement of intent, highlighting key areas of cooperation.

The primary objectives of this partnership include supporting socially vulnerable youth in Kazakhstan's regions, addressing potential human rights violations through responsible business practices, and promoting gender equality within Samruk-Kazyna's operations.

Gibrat Auganov, Managing Director for Corporate Governance, Social and Labour Relations, and Occupational Health and Safety of Samruk-Kazyna, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration.

"As part of our cooperation with the UNDP, we are launching an internship programme to support socially disadvantaged youth from various regions of Kazakhstan. Our initiatives will focus on global standards of gender equality and human rights protection."

Under the joint internship programme, over 300 young individuals from the Mangystau and Kyzylorda regions are expected to benefit from practical training opportunities within Samruk-Kazyna companies this year. This initiative aligns with the UNDP's regional initiative, "Strengthening Community Resilience to Prevent Violent Extremism in Central Asia," funded by the Government of Japan, which aims to empower youth economically and socially.

As part of their collaboration, UNDP will provide technical support to Samruk-Kazyna, including conducting a gender assessment of the company's activities, developing an action plan, and delivering training on human rights due diligence and gender equality.

"This partnership reflects our shared commitment to fostering a more just, responsible, and inclusive future. Implementing human rights standards and gender equality strategies not only enhances business performance but also strengthens corporate governance systems," Sukhrob Khojimatov, UNDP Deputy Representative in Kazakhstan, emphasized the broader impacts of such partnerships.

The UNDP is recognized globally for its role in promoting responsible business practices, particularly through the implementation of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. These principles advocate for businesses to conduct human rights due diligence to identify, prevent, and mitigate adverse impacts on people and the environment.
