Tajikistan initiated the construction of its inaugural solar panel equipment manufacturing plant. President Emomali Rahmon laid the foundation stone for the plant, located in the Dangara Free Economic Zone, in a crucial step towards bolstering the nation's renewable energy capacity.
The project, a collaboration between Tajikistan and Global Solar Wafer, a South Korean company, is slated for completion in four phases. Upon full implementation, the plant is expected to employ over 8,000 individuals, with 95% of the workforce being Tajik citizens. The enterprise will focus on producing equipment for solar panels, with a total investment of $2 bn over the four phases.
To facilitate a conducive business and investment environment, 22 hectares of land in the western part of the Dangara Free Economic Zone have been allocated for the construction of this plant. Construction for the initial phase is set to commence in July 2024.
The first phase of construction is projected to conclude by March 2025, with an estimated production capacity of 5,000 MW of solar panel equipment. This venture aligns with Tajikistan's "green economy" development strategy, aiming to bolster renewable energy sources and increase alternative "green energy" production capacities to at least 1,000 MW by 2030.
The Dangara Free Economic Zone currently hosts 34 registered entities, of which eight are operational. These entities contributed goods worth TJS 73 mn ($6.8 mn) in 2023, highlighting the economic potential of the region.
