Russian Minister of Finance Anton Siluanov highlighted Uzbekistan's challenges with the Mir card, emphasizing the need to explore alternative payment methods such as QR codes, Izvestiya reports. The discussion arose during a delegation presentation amid talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on May 27.
Siluanov noted that issues with Mir cards have persisted since 2022, prompting discussions on alternative settlement systems. These systems would utilize QR codes, related to methods employed in other countries, bypassing the need for Mir card usage.
Uzbekistan ceased accepting Mir cards at the start of September 2022, with authorities working to reinstate service for Russian cards.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Russia's Central Bank is contemplating banning transfers to countries that restricted the use of the Mir cards, a move prompted by recent actions taken by some nations.
During a State Duma meeting, the head of the Russian Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina mentioned the possibility of introducing retaliatory measures against countries that imposed restrictions on the Mir card. The Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Irina Rodnina, highlighted instances where banking organizations and payment systems in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan discontinued or limited Mir card services due to U.S. Treasury Department sanctions.
