Devastating floods hit the Ghor region of Afghanistan on May 17, killing at least 50 people and causing extensive damage. The Etilaatroz publication dislcosed these tragic events, noting that the death toll may rise as the situation is further assessed.
Taliban officials confirmed the fatalities and substantial financial losses. In the Faryab region, 18 more people died in floods affecting five districts, with two additional injuries reported.
The floods destroyed around 2,000 houses and partially damaged over 4,000 more. Significant infrastructure, including hundreds of bridges, culverts, dams, and thousands of productive trees, were wiped out.
"Thousands of cattle have died,"
stated Taliban officials, highlighting the severe agricultural impact.
Northern Afghanistan, including Ghor, Badakhshan, Baghlan, and Herat regions, experienced heavy flooding. The extent of the damage is still being determined, but the destruction of homes and farmland has left many homeless and without livelihoods. Emergency response teams are working to provide relief amid overwhelmed local resources.
The agricultural sector suffered massive losses, with hundreds of hectares of farmland destroyed, posing a threat to food security. Infrastructure damage further complicates recovery efforts. Taliban officials have called for urgent assistance for immediate relief and long-term rebuilding.
