The Senate of Uzbekistan approved the agreement between the Ministry of Defence of Uzbekistan and the US Department of Defence on protecting classified military information, Pressuzb reports. This decision was made during a regular plenary session.
Ravshanbek Alimov, Chairman of the Senate Committee on International Relations, stated that the current global and regional military-political situation and existing threats require Uzbekistan to develop military-technical cooperation with developed countries, including the United States.
The recent attack at Crocus City Hall heightened concerns about rising extremism in the Central Asian region, which might contribute to the considerations behind this decision. As the organizers of the terroristic attack on Crocus City Hall in the Moscow region were concurrently planning another assault in a Central Asian country, Izvestiya reports.
Earlier, Daryo reported that Uzbekistan maintains 38 active Sukhoi fighter jets, with a preference for the Su-27 variant. These jets, symbols of Soviet-era military design, are valued for their adaptability, speed, and firepower, making them important assets for air forces globally. Positioned 11th among 34 nations, Uzbekistan's Sukhoi jets play a key role in the country's modern military strategies amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics.
It is worth noting that Uzbekistan's ranking in the latest 2024 PowerIndex's release, which assesses the world's most powerful armies, slipped from 62nd to 65th. Among Central Asian nations, Uzbekistan now stands second, with Kazakhstan taking the lead at 58th place.
