In anticipation of the summer peak in sugar consumption, Russia has agreed to boost its sugar quota for Kazakhstan by an additional 100,000 tons. The decision was reached during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Serik Zhumangarin, and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Government, Alexei Overchuk, held in Kazan, Russian Federation, on May 17.
This agreement follows the Russian government's recent resolution on May 3, 2024, which imposed a temporary ban on sugar exports until August 31 of this year. Under this ban, a quota of 120,000 tons had been allocated for Kazakhstan.
However, considering the impending surge in sugar demand during the summer months, Kazakhstan sought an increase in the sugar supply quota by an additional 100,000 tons. Approval for the increase was obtained, and the matter is set to be deliberated on May 29 at a meeting of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Council.
Furthermore, discussions during the meeting extended beyond sugar quotas. Both parties deliberated on enhancing trade facilitation measures, including the expansion of checkpoints for lumber transportation from Russia to Kazakhstan.
Presently, only six automobile checkpoints on the Kazakh-Russian border permit the export of lumber by road. However, the Russian side has expressed readiness to open four additional checkpoints in the near future.
In addition to trade matters, the meeting also focused on improving administrative processes, particularly in the issuance of electronic passports for vehicles and equipment involved in mutual trade activities.
Moreover, discussions encompassed broader cooperation initiatives, such as the construction of the second stage of the Shulbinskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) and the formulation of a master plan for the utilization of Irtysh River waters.
Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin further solidified bilateral relations during his separate meeting with Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Marat Khusnullin, and Rais of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov. The discussions centered on reinforcing cooperation between the two nations.
