Russian court extends detention of suspects in Crocus City Hall terrorist attack case
Moscow's Basmanny District Court has extended the detention period of four defendants implicated in the criminal case surrounding the terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert hall, as it was informed my Ozodlik Radiosi (Radio Freedom) on May 16.
The individuals whose detention has been prolonged include Muhammedsobir Fayzov, Dalerjon Mirzoeva, Muradali Rajabalizoda, and Shamsidin Faridouni, all citizens of Tajikistan. They appeared in court clad in convict attire and shackled with handcuffs on their hands and feet. The judge's ruling extends their detention until August 22.
Interfax states that all four court sessions were conducted behind closed doors, as per the investigation's request. This measure is aimed at preserving the confidentiality of the ongoing inquiry and ensuring the safety of all parties involved in the legal proceedings.
Additionally, the court also decided to prolong the detention period of four more defendants - Nazrimad Lutfulloi, Jumakhan Qurbanov, Yakubjon Yusufzada, and Muhammad Sharipzoda - on the same day.
The terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall occurred on March 22, 2024, leaving a devastating toll in its wake. According to the Russian Investigative Committee, at least 144 people lost their lives in the incident, with some victims falling to gunfire and many perishing in the ensuing blaze.
The Islamic State, a recognized terrorist group, claimed responsibility for the attack. While Western nations, including the United States, are convinced of the group's involvement, Russia has raised the possibility of Ukrainian involvement in the perpetration of the attack. However, Kiev vehemently denies any such allegations.
There are allegations that the suspects may have been subjected to torture during their capture and subsequent interrogation, raising concerns about the methods employed in the pursuit of justice in this case.
