Tajikistan's Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin condemned the alleged torture of four Tajik nationals suspected of orchestrating the Crocus City Hall terrorist attack in the Moscow region on March 22, resulting in 145 fatalities and leaving hundreds injured, the Tajik news agency ASIA-Plus reports.
The suspects were reportedly subjected to torture, evidenced by graphic videos and photos circulating online showing two of the individuals with visible injuries. When these suspects later appeared in court, they displayed cuts, bruises, and other signs of physical abuse.
Muhriddin criticized the methods used during the detention and interrogation of the suspects, highlighting that any confessions obtained under such conditions are generally considered unreliable. "The price of confessions obtained in this way is well known to everyone," he stated, indicating the questionable validity of the suspects' later testimonies.
The Kremlin has not stated the allegations of torture. However, Russia's state-appointed human rights commissioner publicly denounced the use of torture, describing it as "absolutely inadmissible." Despite this, the official stance remains largely unaddressed after the circulating interrogation videos. Torture is explicitly prohibited under Russia's constitution, and the country is a signatory to the UN Convention Against Torture.
The attack stirred significant controversy, with Russian officials attributing the act to Ukraine and its Western allies—a claim both Kyiv and Western governments vehemently deny. Instead, they accuse Moscow of using the incident for propagandistic purposes. Conversely, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, further complicating the narrative.
Adding to the complexity, recent interrogation videos broadcasted by Russian state media purportedly show the suspects claiming they were promised safe passage to Ukraine, along with financial incentives for executing the attack.
