Over the past 50 years, immunization efforts have saved an estimated 154 mn lives worldwide, UNICEF reported on April 25. This achievement, equivalent to six lives saved every minute, underscores the unparalleled impact of vaccination programs in safeguarding human health.
The study, conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Gavi, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, highlights the transformative power of immunization in preventing infant mortality and ensuring healthy lives from infancy to adulthood.
Despite these remarkable gains, the study emphasizes the importance of sustaining and accelerating immunization efforts, particularly in light of challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. An estimated 67 mn children worldwide missed out on essential vaccines during the pandemic years, highlighting the urgent need to prioritize immunization programs.
UNICEF's role as a key player in global vaccine procurement and distribution is pivotal in reaching underserved communities and ensuring equitable access to immunization services. Through strategic investments in vaccine storage, distribution, and digital technologies, UNICEF has enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of immunization programs in Uzbekistan.
The launch of the "Humanly Possible" campaign marks a renewed commitment to advancing immunization as a cornerstone of public health. This joint initiative by WHO, UNICEF, Gavi, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation seeks to mobilize support and resources for immunization programs worldwide, reaffirming the collective commitment to protecting human health and celebrating the extraordinary achievements of global immunization efforts.
