From January to February 2024, Azerbaijan imported 208.87mn cubic metres of Turkmen gas under swap (refundable) transactions via Iran, up 2.4% year-on-year, NebitGas reports.
Experts told Daryo that these supplies have been taking place since the beginning of 2022 under a trilateral agreement. Under the open-ended contract, Iran can receive up to 3.0-4.0bn cubic metres of gas per year from Serakhs, Turkmenistan, for delivery to Astara, Azerbaijan.
These transit services help to supply natural gas to Iranian provinces such as Rezavi, North and South Khorasan, Golestan and Semnan, which are far from national gas resources.
Azerbaijan's State Statistics Committee reports that Azerbaijan imported a total of 1.51bn cubic metres of Turkmen gas in 2023, up 77% from the previous year.
